Food Addiction

Food addiction is similar to several other disorders, including binge eating disorder, bulimia, compulsive overeating, and other feeding and eating disorders. Food addiction is a highly controversial concept, though most studies suggest it exists. It works similarly to drug addiction.

Because we need food to survive, our desire to eat is hardwired into our brains. Craving food when you are hungry or getting pleasure from a delicious meal are, of course, perfectly normal experiences. But for some, it goes beyond that. People who suffer from food addiction binge eat uncontrollably, often until they are painfully full. This usually involves high-fat or high-sugar foods that trigger a pleasurable dopamine release or ‘high’. But this high is always followed by a crash-landing, and then they feel worse than they did in the first place – and the self-loathing that results starts the cycle all over again.

If this sounds familiar, we want you to know that there is hope – and we can help. Though food addiction can sometimes feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, the truth is that with a comprehensive treatment programme and robust support network, you can recover for good.

Symptoms of Food addiction

Here are some ways to distinguish between occasional overeating and food addiction:

  • You eat far more, and more often, than you want to
  • You try to set rules for yourself, but only end up breaking them
  • You still crave food even when you’re full
  • You eat until you’re extremely stuffed
  • You hide your true eating habits from other people
  • Your health is suffering as a result, but you’re still unable to stop

Effects of Compulsive Eating

Food addiction can have detrimental impacts on your health, such as:

  • Dangerous cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type II diabetes
  • Various forms of cancer

Compulsive overeating is marked by intense feelings of guilt and shame, which can lead to major depression. This is compounded by obesity and poor body image.
