Because we need food to survive, our desire to eat is hardwired into our brains. Craving food when you are hungry or getting pleasure from a delicious meal are, of course, perfectly normal experiences. But for some, it goes beyond that. People who suffer from food addiction binge eat uncontrollably, often until they are painfully full. This usually involves high-fat or high-sugar foods that trigger a pleasurable dopamine release or ‘high’. But this high is always followed by a crash-landing, and then they feel worse than they did in the first place – and the self-loathing that results starts the cycle all over again.
If this sounds familiar, we want you to know that there is hope – and we can help. Though food addiction can sometimes feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, the truth is that with a comprehensive treatment programme and robust support network, you can recover for good.
Here are some ways to distinguish between occasional overeating and food addiction:
Food addiction can have detrimental impacts on your health, such as:
Compulsive overeating is marked by intense feelings of guilt and shame, which can lead to major depression. This is compounded by obesity and poor body image.
Reclaim Health holistic treatment programme is administered by a highly qualified clinical team, with many years of experience treating behavioural addictions and mental health conditions.
We don’t just treat your eating behaviour – we look deeper into the root cause of it and the resulting emotional, physical and psychological impact to formulate a treatment plan that addresses you as a whole. And when you address these underlying problems at the source of your food addiction, you will find that changing your unwanted patterns is more possible than you imagined.
Evidence shows that those who complete inpatient treatment are more likely to maintain their recovery long-term than those who seek outpatient treatment. This is because, in residential treatment, you receive comprehensive care from a variety of therapists while living onsite and putting your focus 100 percent on your treatment programme. As a resident, more time each day is set aside for active steps towards recovery, and everything you do – from individual counselling to fitness therapy to recreational outings – has therapeutic value.
Reclaim Health Limited is a leading addiction treatment company providing personalised treatments and rehab throughout Uganda, offering a wide range of help and guidance for all types of addictions.
